Course Syllabus 1 Beyond Data Part 2 – 2025 SustainTech Workshop Conceptual Site Models for Effective Remediation and Risk Management Instructors: Guy Patrick and Pete Craig Email* address: guy@patrickenv.com; petec@vei.ca Office phone: Guy (604) 219-8437; Pete (226) 338-3248 Office hours (phone): Monday – Friday; 9 AM – 2PM Pacific * preferred method of contact Course Description “Beyond Data Part 2” builds on the theme of the Conceptual Site Model (“CSM”), showcasing the tool as a practical means to identify and implement effective remediation and risk management measures at contaminated sites. In the sold-out 2024 SEIMA workshop “Beyond Data”, we explored the central role of the CSM, emphasizing its importance in planning and conducting basic site characterization. Now, in Part 2, we review the basics and then delve into the implications for risk assessment, remedial options assessment, and shaping site investigations to support both. In this highly interactive workshop, we break into teams of 3 to 5 persons and tackle challenging tasks using synthetic site data that simulates common conundrums as we apply the key elements of the CSM to practical problems, and learn to identify pitfalls and opportunities in risk management, remedial design and implementation. Current and innovative approaches to site investigation, risk management and cleanup will be explored within the context of the CSM, including rapid high resolution site characterization for remedial design, permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) for plume control (metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, PFAS), ex situ and bulk water treatment; in situ chemical oxidation and reduction, and many others. The workshop uses many real- world examples and the latest concepts in adult learning to put you into the critical learning zone, gaining competency in the assessment and interpretation of environmental data, and integrating the data into a CSM that can be used to develop cost-effective and practical approaches for successful risk management outcomes. Instructors Mr. Guy Patrick is a contaminant hydrogeologist and environmental engineer with over 40 years of experience across Canada and globally in the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites in soil, sediment and bedrock environments. He provides technical training via in-class courses and webinars through GeoEnviroPro (http://geoenviropro.com/ ), with a focus on effective use of conceptual site models in site characterization, risk assessment and remedial planning. Mr. Pete Craig is a former consultant and current contractor with over 20 years of international experience in contaminated site assessment, site remediation and heavy civil. Since earning his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1996 and a Master’s in Environmental Engineering in Stanford in 1998, he has managed or been the senior technical lead on projects up to $200M in value across Canada and abroad, with hands-on experience in a wide range of complicated hydrogeological and chemical contexts. Assisting Mr. Patrick at GeoEnviroPro as a webinar, course and workshop lead, Mr. Craig’s day-to-day role as a manager of strategy and operations for VEI Inc. (formerly Vertex Environmental; https://vertexenvironmental.ca/ ) keeps him deeply involved in advancing remedial options assessment, site risk management, and environmental research. Mr. Craig’s expertise, based on practical experience, is focused on translating theory and intent into practical site works. Course Goals Participants who complete this workshop will be able to: • Understand and apply conceptual site models – CSMs - at virtually every contaminated site • Understand subsurface behaviours of both common and unusual site contaminants in both simple (soluble contaminants under “Darcian” conditions) and challenging (dynamic environments, low permeability, and fracture/secondary porosity dominated) contexts • Link the CSM with effective remediation strategies • Balance characterization efforts to avoid critical data gaps and make defensible recommendations • Systematically consider a full range of risk management options • Apply the CSM through the design phase of risk management and remediation measures to avoid costly re-work and failed projects. Course Topics and Program • What is a Conceptual Site Model? • Key Elements of the CSM • Implication non-aqueous phase liquids, fracture flow and seasonal variability • Defensible delineation • Major risk management approaches, and design considerations • Examples of incomplete or erroneous CSMs leading to project failures • Systematic and paired development of the CSM with risk management/remediation alternatives to help ensure project success • Public and open-source technical resources to support better risk management design Course Syllabus 3 Pre-Requisites Participants should have a good background knowledge of contaminated sites investigation and assessment, either as a practitioner in consulting or industry, or as a regulator. At least five years of practical experience is recommended. Required Texts, Materials, or Equipment • Reference materials, lecturettes and PDFs of hand outs will be made available following registration • Participants are expected to have a personal computer at the event • Worksheets will be distributed within the session Course Completion and Certificates Upon successful completion of the course, a Certificate of Completion will be issued on request to attendees by GeoEnviroPro. The Certificate will include the number of professional development hours earned.
