She currently leads a team providing support to marketing, sales and factory operations ensuring successful implementation of innovation and renovation projects in addition to ongoing regulatory affairs and technical support. She twice led Nestlé Purina through the successful transition to new CFIA regulations on the importation of pet food from the USA with no business interruption. She has led a number of cross-functional teams resulting in the implementation of new policies, procedures, tech- nology as well as enhanced learning and professional development in these areas. Janice currently sits on the Board of Directors and the Regulatory Affairs Advisory Working Group for the Pet Food Association of Canada. She was President of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology from 2009-2010. She holds a Master’s degree in Food Science and an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Food Microbiology from the University of Guelph. SOPHIE JACQUES ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE, DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY I am an Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. I received my Bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Psychology, a Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in Developmental Psychology. I then did a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Université de Montréal before coming to Dalhousie in 2003. My research focusses on the development of self-control in children and now dogs! I’m interested in what helps humans and other species develop the ability to control their behaviour and emotions, par- ticularly the role that language might play in that regard. www.pfac.com (416) 447-9970 petfood@pfac.com CHRIS NASH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PFAC Chris has been in the food industry his entire career, from his first job at 17 working in a restaurant, to working in quality assurance and food safety, for government, and more recently in agri-food industry asso- ciations. With a Master of Science degree in food safety, and a Certified Association Executive, Chris took over as the Executive Director for PFAC in 2020 and is excited to continue to learn and support the pet food industry into the future. SARAH KUTULAKOS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & COO CANADA CHINA BUSINESS COUNCIL Sarah joined the CCBC in 2007 and has since revitalized CCBC’s role as Canada’s premier bilateral trade and investment organization, re-center- ing the Council’s activities around providing business services, catalyzing business growth and activity, and advocating for stronger Sino-Canadian bilateral trade and investment. Prior to joining CCBC, Sarah worked for 11 years in marketing, product development, and management with a major multinational corporation, with multiple assignments involving China. Sarah has been involved in the Greater China region since the late 1980’s when she lived and worked in Taiwan. There, she was the first non-Chinese employee of a local high- tech start-up firm, where she gained a deep understanding of Chinese business practices. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Sarah’s interest in China began at the University of Wisconsin, where she studied Chinese, marketing, and international business. She holds an MBA in finance and operations from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. She fre- quently speaks on China issues, including marketing, trade, investment, and Canada-China relations. www.pfac.com (416) 447-9970 petfood@pfac.com SYLVAIN CHARLEBOIS PROFESSOR, FOOD DISTRIBUTION AND POLICY FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT, DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is a Professor in food distribution and policy in the Faculties of Management and Agriculture at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He is also the Senior Director of the Agri-food Analytics Lab, also located at Dalhousie University. Before joining Dalhousie, he was affiliated with the University of Guelph’s Arrell Food Institute, which he co-founded. While at the University of Guelph, he was also the Associate Dean of Research for the College of Business and Economics. He is a recipient of multiple federal government research grants. Known as “The Food Professor”, his current research interest lies in the broad area of food distribution, security and safety. He is one of the world’s most cited scholars in food supply chain management, food value chains and traceability. He has authored five books on global food systems, his most recent one published in 2017 by Wiley-Blackwell entitled “Food Safety, Risk Intelligence and Benchmarking”. He has also published over 750 peer-reviewed journal articles in several academic and professional publications. Furthermore, his research has been featured in several newspapers and major media groups, including The Economist, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, BBC, NBC, ABC, the Globe & Mail, the National Post and the Toronto Star. BETSY FLORES SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, PUBLIC POLICY, PFI In her role, Betsy guides PFI’s legislative, regulatory, trade and market access strategies, as well as manages the association’s government rela- tions and regulatory staff. Prior to joining PFI, Betsy served as the director of research and promo- tion programs for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural continued on next page www.pfac.com (416) 447-9970 petfood@pfac.com Marketing Service (AMS), where she was responsible for directing and managing the full range of activities for oversight of six checkoff pro- grams for the Livestock and Poultry Program. She also worked as a dep- uty director in the office of agricultural affairs at the United States Trade Representative, where she was involved in issues such as biotechnology, new technologies, the WTO Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement and technical barriers to trade. Prior to the public service, she was vice president of animal care at the National Milk Producers Federation, where she represented and advo- cated for dairy producers on regulatory issues impacting the U.S. dairy industry in front of federal and global officials. In this role, Betsy man- aged the National Dairy FARM Program™, a third-party verified, national animal care program for the U.S. dairy industry. She also held govern- ment relations positions within the Biotechnology Industry Association and Monsanto. JUAN GOMEZ GLOBAL DIRECTOR, COMPANION ANIMAL BUSINESS, ALLTECH Dr. Juan Gomez received his B.Sc. and B. Eng. from Universidad Federico Villareal in Lima, Peru; a M.Sc. in Food Science, from Leeds University, Leeds, England; and a Ph.D. in Food Science from Cornell University. Dr. Gomez held a Post-Doctoral position at Cornell University before joining Ralston Purina International (known now as Cargill Agri Brands Purina) as Director for Research and Technology with additional respon- sibilities in formulation, nutrition, quality assurance, technical support, product development and supply chain management. Dr. Gomez is currently the global director for Alltech’s Companion Animal Business. He has published significantly in trade journals and peer-reviewed publications and is a sought-af- ter speaker for conferences and trade shows. He is the past chair of the AFIA Nutrition Committee, a member of the American Dairy Science Association, the Institute of Food Technology, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. SELINE LEE-ANDERSEN PARTNER, MCCARTHY TETRAULT Selina Lee-Andersen practices environmental, regulatory and Aboriginal law at McCarthy Tétrault LLP. Based in Vancouver, Selina’s practice spans a range of industries from renewable energy and infrastructure, to min- ing and manufacturing. Having worked in an advisory capacity in both the public and private sectors. She regularly advises clients on food and product regulatory matters, as well as extended producer responsibil- ity programs across Canada. Selina’s practice also specializes in climate change law, where she provides strategic advice to clients on matters relating to offset systems, emissions trading, climate change disclosure, compliance and clean technologies and is widely published in the area of carbon transactions. DANIEL TRAMP TECHNICAL SALES- COMPANION ANIMAL DIVISION, WENGER Daniel is a graduate of Washburn University in 2009 with a degree in business management and finance. Daniel also holds a degree in diesel technology. Daniel’s career with Wenger Mfg. began in 2017. Proceeding his career with Wenger Mfg., Daniel spent 8 years in the seed coating industry with specializations in automation and material flow con- trol. She is based in Chicago, where she joined the company in 2021. In her current role, Anne Scott provides high quality analysis on key trends relevant to food and nutrition in the US, with a special focus on fresh food, breakfast cereals, and processed fruit and vegetables. Anne Scott has a master’s in Nutrition Communication from Tufts University and has a keen interest in understanding and providing insights on the key trends shaping growth in her specialist markets. She offers analyses that have been quickly recognised and valued by a range of clients active in food and nutrition. MELANIE SIPPEL INCOMING PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBER, PFAC Currently the Senior Companion Animal Nutritionist for Trouw Nutrition Canada, providing product development and technical support, as well as Regulatory oversight. Masters of Science in Animal Nutrition from University of Guelph, followed by experience in both companion ani- mal and livestock nutrition and roles in Quality Control and Nutrition.
