Starting in quality assurance at Schneider Foods, later purchased by Maple Leaf, Chris built his technical skills in food safety. With experi- ence at the CFIA as a meat inspector and policy leader, Egg Farmers of Canada, and the Canadian Meat Council, Chris brings both a government and industry perspective to his work. He lives 35 min west of Otta- wa with his wife, two boys, dog Eloise and cat Cinder. Dr. Jarrod Kersey, President, PFAC, Simmons Pet Food He began his career as a trade association representative managing regulatory and trade for cottonseed compa- nies. It was here he began his interaction with AAFCO and the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine. Jarrod moved to the pet food industry, accepting a position at Iams. While there, he provided marketing and trade sup- port in North America, and later moved to Geneva, Switzerland to support the European business. After return- ing to the US, Jarrod joined the AFIA as Director of State Legislative Affairs. Jarrod helped member companies navigate the changing regulatory environment of food safety and ingredient approvals. Jarrod joined Mars in 2010 and had the opportunity to develop new technical skills with the construction of a kennel/cattery and the acquisition of Iams. In 2016, Jarrod moved to Northwest Arkansas to accept a position with Simmons Pet Food. Jarrod received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Masters of Science and Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. Jarrod also holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Dayton. He is married to Amber and they have three children, two grandchildren, two dogs and a cat. Dr. Anna-Kate Shoveller, Associate Professor, University of Guelph Received her doctorate in nutrition and metabolism at the University of Alberta in 2004 and is currently an associate professor in the Department of Animal Biosciences, University of Guelph. From 2007-2015 she was employed by Procter & Gamble and Mars Pet Care, but now teaches companion animal and equine nutrition and runs an active comparative nutrition research group. She has published over 60 peer- reviewed papers, contributed to multiple book chapters, applied for multiple patents, and has gained over $1.5 million within 3 years of her appointment. Shoveller is an active member of the Companion Animal section of the American Society of Animal Science and a board member of the Canadian Society of Animal Science. Peter Tabor, Pet Food Institute Peter Tabor serves as the vice president of regulatory and international affairs for the Pet Food Institute (PFI). He coordinates PFI’s interaction with federal and state regulatory officials, as well as engages US and foreign government officials regarding market access for US pet food products. Prior to joining PFI, Peter served in variety of capacities in the US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), most recently as the director of the plant division. During his tenure with FAS, Peter was charged with addressing export challenges for a range of food and agriculture products, including those produced with agricultural biotechnology. As a senior trade policy advisor for FAS, he consulted with domestic stakeholders to devel- op and deliver US policy positions on key foreign market access issues. e-ssential 2020 Speaker Bios Susan Hayes , Executive Director , AAFCO Susan Hays is an accomplished Executive Director with a so und association managemen t background. She's worked with a gricultural and trade associations as well as f oundations as an Executive Director since 198 7. He r success suppo rting senior l eaders, board executives and members while expanding the mission and program offerings of the non-profit associations she manages is documented. She brings strong manage- men t and leadership experience to AAFCO to improve the value to AAFCO members and industry . She has a BA from the University of Wyoming where she majored in secondary education and French. Dr. David Meeker , Senior VP Scientific Services, North American Rendering Association Serves as the scientific/technical advisor to the North American rendering industry on science, animal dis- ease and feed safety issues . He is a lso research directo r fo r the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation. Meeke r previously served in positions at the National Turkey Fe deration and National Pork Producers Council, was directo r of the Board on Agriculture and Natur al Resources at the Nation al Academy of Sci- ences and was an associate professor at Ohio State University. Ove r the past 30 yrs he has been an adviser to numerous organizations in the U.S. and internationally. He is past president of the U. S. Animal Health Association, a me mbe r of the scientific advisory panel of the World Renderers Organization (WRO) and a forme r membe r of the USDA Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Animal Health. Jared is a recognised expert in market trends and has spent nearly a decade researching the industry. He is frequently a featured speaker at major industry conferences, such as Sweets & Snacks Expo, and is regular- ly cited in the press like The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, NPR, Reuters, Bloomberg and The Econo- mist. Jared holds a master’s degree in international relations from The University of Chicago Brad Boldridge, Retail Client Director, Pet, Nielsen Brad Boldridge is the Retailer Director of Nielsen’s Neighborhood Pet Channel. Brad has 20 years of in- sights experience and has spent time both as a client and a client consultant. As a passionate Pet Parent himself, Brad enjoys partnering to help retailers better understand the changing needs of Pet Parents and how to best leverage consumer and market insights to accelerate in-store growth. Brad is an active part- ner on Nielsen’s team of Pet Experts who explore emerging trends and industry challenges across the Pet Channel. Brad holds a Degree in Business Management and currently resides in the Kansas City Metropoli- tan Area. Nora Gonzalez, Partner & Director at G&G Gestoria en Comercio Exterior, S.C. Ms. Gonzalez is founding partner of G&G Gestoria en Comercio Exterior, consulting firm specialized in helping Mexican companies to export its products and services and in assisting international companies to enter or ex- pand into the Mexican market. Over the past 20 years, Ms. Gonzalez has been dealing with international com- panies in Mexico and with different markets around the world. Prior to becoming partner of the firm, Ms. Gon- zalez worked as a market specialist in CIDUE (Center for the European Union at Jalisco’s Secretariat of Economic Promotion). Ms. Gonzalez has coordinated and completed diverse market studies and developed trade missions for several companies and governments from Canada, the US, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, UK , Brazil, Japan and France. Ms. Gonzalez has an International Trade degree from the University ITESO (Instituto Tecno- logico de Estudios Superiores de Occidente de Estudios Superiores de Occidente). Janice Baker, Incoming PFAC President, Nestle Purina Pet Care Janice Baker has held various technical positions at Nestlé in Research & Development and Technical Ser- vices in the USA, Nestlé Canada and Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada over the last 26 years. She currently leads a team providing support to marketing, sales and factory operations ensuring successful implemen- tation of innovation and renovation projects in addition to ongoing regulatory affairs and technical sup- port. She twice led Nestlé Purina through the successful transition to new CFIA regulations on the impor- tation of pet food from the USA with no business interruption. She has led a number of cross-functional teams resulting in the implementation of new policies, procedures, technology as well as enhanced learn- ing and professional development in these areas. Janice currently sits on the Board of Directors and the Regulatory Affairs Advisory Working Group for the Pet Food Association of Canada. She was President of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology from 2009-2010. She holds a Master's degree in Food Science and an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Food Microbiology from the University of Guelph e-ssential 2020 Speaker Bios Dr. James Templeman, Post Doctoral Researcher, University of Guelph James received his doctorate in companion animal nutrition from the University of Guelph in June of 2020 and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Anna-Kate Shoveller’s laboratory in the Department of Animal Biosciences at the University of Guelph. James’s PhD research was largely focused on the nutrition and metabolism of sporting/working dogs, specifically sled dogs. Throughout his PhD, James authored and/or contributed to 10 manuscripts either published or currently under review for publication and has present- ed his research at scientific/industrial conferences in Canada, the United States, and abroad.
